By Visiting A Walk In Clinic Tampa Patients Can Receive Basic Treatment

By Paul Bell

It is a sad fact that millions of people simply cannot afford medical care. They cannot afford medical insurance and when they become ill or sustain injuries, they will not be treated in any private facility by any private physician. That is one of the reasons why so many poor people die at a young age. Thankfully, by visiting a walk in clinic Tampa residents can at least be assured of basic medical care at no cost or at a very low fee.

There are many such facilities all over the United States, more than eleven thousand of them, in fact. These are distributed over nine thousand geographic locations. Some of them are managed and owned by charities, others are owned by local authorities and yet others are situated inside pharmacies. Patients cannot make an appointment prior to visiting such a facility.

People who has no choice but to rely on these clinics should make sure that they know exactly where each facility is. It is important to keep in mind that all clinics do not offer the same range of services. Some, for example, will only accept emergency cases. Others focus on infants and small children. If one is aware of the type of treatment offered by each clinic one can attend the most suitable one when it becomes necessary.

It is sadly true that these clinics offer very limited treatment options and that they have extremely limited resources. The fact remains, however, that they are free or virtually free. The wide distribution of clinics means that there is at least one in close proximity of anyone that may need their services. Patients are also reassured by the fact that these clinics never refuse to treat anyone.

These clinics have many critics. They say that patients almost never receive quality care or treatment. They lament the fact that patients are forced to wait for hours before they are seen because no appointments can be made. Then there is the fact that these facilities often deal with hundreds of patients each day. There is simply no time to spend with each patients. Critics say this result in inferior treatment.

Some urgent care facilities have a doctor on duty, but the majority of clinics only have a nursing practitioner tending to patients. The treatment options available to the patient are therefore extremely limited. Nursing practitioners are not trained to make diagnoses and they therefore tend to treat their patients symptomatically. The true underlying problem is therefore never identified and treated. Of course, patients must accept the fact that they cannot be given of prescription medication.

One of the most important disadvantages of these clinics is that no medical history of patients are kept. Medical histories are extremely important to medical experts. It contains valuable facts regarding past treatments, medication previously prescribed and conditions that are currently treated. Without a full medical history it is not possible to provide quality medical care.

Despite the criticism and drawbacks, these clinics still remain the only hope of those too poor to pay the exorbitant fees charged by medical practitioners. They play an important role in the lives of their patients and they do manage to treat numerous complaints. One can just hope that the poor will be offered more comprehensive care in the future.
